Wetherby Road 20mph Zone
16/07/2024
We are pleased to confirm that following the City of York Council Executive for Transport decision session in September 2023, the 20mph zone along Wetherby Road, between the chicanes, to include all the cul-de-sacs that lead off that section (Laburnum Close/Yew Tree Close/Middlewood Close/Maythorpe) has finally been implemented this week.
New 20mph road signs have been installed at each end of the new 20mph zone.
Changes to Speed Limits around Rufforth

Wetherby Road
At the City of York Council Executive for Transport decision session in September 2023 the 20 mph speed zone along Wetherby Road, between the chicanes and to include all the cul-de-sacs that lead off that section (Laburnum Close / Yew Tree Close / Middlewood Close / Maythorpe), was finally approved. The current workload at City of York Council means that installation is anticipated mid-2024.
Bradley Lane
Regrettably, the extended speed limit on Bradley Lane was declined. The Parish Council will pursue other options involving data logging with the intention to revisit the issue when appropriate.
24/04/2023
The Parish Council is pleased to share some good news on the proposed changes to speed limits on Bradley Lane and Wetherby Road (and side streets) detailed below in our December update.
A subsequent decision by the CYC Executive Member for Transport has decided that a 30 mph limit is more appropriate on the Bradley Lane extension than a 40 mph buffer zone. This is to address previously raised safety concerns and encourage motorists to observe more appropriate speeds in the residential area.
The revised changes to speed limits will therefore be as follows:
- A 20 mph speed limit between the chicanes to include all the cul de sacs that lead off that section (Laburnum/Yew Tree/Middlewood/Maythorpe)
- An extended 30 mph limit on the Bradley Lane approach
- 30 mph countdown signs on the B1224 Western approach
This is a major win for residents and we trust that you will give it your support.
16/12/2022
At the December meeting of the CYC Executive for Transport, the Parish Council secured moves to establish changes to speed limits around Rufforth as follows:
- A 20 mph speed limit between the chicanes to include all the cul de sacs that lead off that section (Laburnum/Yew Tree/Middlewood/Maythorpe)
- A 40 mph buffer zone on the Bradley Lane approach
- 30 mph countdown signs on the B1224 Western approach
The above will be advertised for comment so please look out for lamppost notices etc.
The Parish Council has been in dialogue with CYC since 2015 on these issues, so this comes after lengthy campaigning. Community Speed Watch, which started in 2017 under the leadership of John Place, provided evidence that has added value and impetus to our case. With this evidence and through tireless pressure from the Parish Council, we have seen the installation of Vehicle Activated Signs in 2021 and now these revised speed limits.
Thanks to Councillor Nick Murray, who has spearheaded this campaign on behalf of the Parish Council, and to Speedwatch Coordinator Terry Edmonds for his work in data collection and analysis.
There will be a period of evaluation of details, such as sign locations, before we see the completion.
Vehicle Activated Speed Limit Signs
14/11/2021
The Parish Council are pleased to share the news of the installation Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) on Wetherby Road (West approach) and Bradley Lane, in Rufforth, to warn motorists approaching the village of the 30-mph speed limit. The signs have inbuilt software which will gather data to further enable the council to develop a longer-term road safety and traffic management strategy. These signs are in addition to the recently erected speedwatch signs at each of the three village gateways.
The equipment has been largely funded by the Parish Council, with the aid of grant funding from the North Yorkshire Police, Fire & Crime Commissioners office (AJ1 scheme) and, once again, the council thank the team of Community Speedwatch volunteers who have gathered evidence over the last three years that helped to drive the scheme forward.
This project has taken over three years of constant evidence gathering and negotiation with public bodies to bring to fruition yet is only a step along the way as we strive to develop our strategy of improving road safety for our residents.
Community Speedwatch Signs

The Parish Council are pleased to share the news of the installation of new, permanent speedwatch signs at each of the three village gateways. The signs are part of a wider initiative that will shortly see the installation of Vehicle Activated Signs* (VAS) on Bradley Lane and Wetherby Road, Rufforth, and is another step in our efforts to improve safety for our residents.
The equipment has been largely funded by the Parish Council, with the aid of grant funding from the North Yorkshire Police, Fire & Crime Commissioners office, AJ1 scheme. Our thanks go to the hardy team of Community Speedwatch volunteers who have gathered evidence over the last three years that helped to drive the scheme forward, and their continued efforts to improve road safety.
